June 2017, Rastoke&Plitvice – Croatia
Oh, what a perfect day for nature! I knew something BIG is coming, when we left Zagreb behind.
An unexpected surprise along the way? Yes please!
Its name is Rastoke, a picturesque watermill village built at the encounter of 2 rivers. Actually, this is a little preview of what’s about to come next.
Water has always attracted people…so when they came here and saw the natural waterfalls, they knew it is a place to stay.
I’ve rarely seen something more magical, than taking what nature offers you, and build everything around that. Not a single house, watermill, tavern, bridge or paved road disturbs the environment. Chapeau! 🙂
After a breath of fresh air, we leave Rastoke, for what’s going to be the highlight of our roadtrip.
“Heaven is a place on Earth”, and it’s called the Plitvice Lakes.
More than 1 million visitors a year? No wonder!
Picture this:
- 2 entries, 4 different hiking routes for each
- 16 terraced crystal clear lakes with changing colours
- 90 waterfalls
- Kilometers of timber boardwalks across the land and lakes, treks into the woods, bus and electric boat routes
We were part of all that, accompanied by the continuous sound of rushing waters.
5 hours and a day I will always remember.
Prices
Apr 1 – June 30 & Sep 1 – Oct 31: 110 kn($15)/person
Parking: 7 kn($1)/hour
Next stop: Zadar!
You can find here our summer cross-country roadtrip itinerary: costs&map included.
Happy travels and stay safe!

Sensational itinerary. My wife and I would probably visit Croatia on a tour or possibly a cruise that hopefully includes Plitvice.

That’s a great idea! I saw many ferries and yachts coming every day in Split and Dubrovnik, so it’s also douable by sea. And Plitvice can be a 1 day trip from Zagreb or Zadar. It was the highlight of our trip, so don’t miss it!:) I absolutely loved Croatia, it has amazing and diverse landscapes, and perfect highways, very friendly and hardworking people. You will love it! 🙂
