Welcome to the King’s Landing: Dubrovnik!

Reading time: 5 min.

June 2017, Dubrovnik – Croatia

When my birthday is coming, I know it has to be celebrated in a very special place on Earth. A different one every year.

So here we are, on the road for 12 days so far, enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning, then saying goodbye to Split, heading south, crossing the Bosnia&Herzegovina border (everybody wants a piece of the Adriatic, wouldn’t blame them for it), entering again to Croatia, aaaand after 4 long hours:

Helloooo, Dubrovnik.

The sea is calling. Cannot miss the beach on my birthday.

Banje Beach is the closest to the Old Town, so grab a towel and go. The divine mix of hot pebbles and sand, cold as ice crystal clear water, will make you feel like a newborn again.

Veeery strange feeling, but so refreshing! So under the blessing of the sun, cocktail in hand, protected by the city walls behind, enjoying an amazing view of the islands, don’t really know how the hours went by.

And we had so many things planned for today. Never mind, let’s consider it a 2-days anniversary.

We wrap up the day by entering the magical world of the Old Town, the most impressive medieval scenery I’ve ever seen. Add to this the fact that Game of Thrones had their share of scenes set in Dubrovnik, and you’ll fully understand the thrill of actually being here.

With just a little bit revealed of this breathtaking place, I declare myself happy for the first day.

But next morning, the marathon begins.

  • Patiently waiting in the cue for the Cable Car: checked!

Going up is one thing, but standing on top of the hill, with the whole city at your feet, this is something to remember. There’s no better way of having it all in one perfect frame: the Walls, the sea, the green luxuriant Lokrum island revealing itself out of the blue waters. Wow!

  • 3 – hour Walls walk: checked!

Couldn’t miss the chance to step on the intact ancient walls of Dubrovnik, never breached by a hostile army. Tell yourself that only the sea view part is enough, but you won’t resist the temptation of doing it all. At least we didn’t, even if our tired feet were saying ‘no more steps!’.

  • Sunset cruise: also checked!

Such a day can only be properly rewarded with a cruise on a Pirate Ship.

Maybe it was the champagne effect, but watching the sun slowly hide between the islands and under the velvet waters, the sky going from sweet-yellow to fire-orange, was the best picture of the whole roadtrip.

    1. Yeahh…i think it was the best birthday so far! Will always remember those incredible walls, and of course the sunset cruise on the last day. I strongly recommend Dubrovnik, even for those who are not Game of Thrones fans :))

    1. Hello dears! Well…we arrived at the beginning of june and it was like that, but it can get really hot in july and august. Not to mention how crowded it can get! But it was excellent weather during our stay:)

      1. Yess…the locals told us the number of tourists really ‘exploded’ in the last years, since Game of Thrones set their Kings’s Landing scenes there. We were lucky to arrive at the beginning of the season! Have you been there?

  2. Dubrovnik looks like a beautiful place, sounds like you had a great time there. My eye doctor did his honeymoon there – flying all the way from Seattle, USA. Maybe one day I’ll get there, too. Thanks for the follow! Happy travels!
